Montgomery Row is a family place - it always has been. You can follow the building's history by following the limbs of the Hartshorn Family Tree. At the top of the tree is Charles B. (C.B.) Hartshorn then to the next limb, Tom and Robert (Bobby) Hartshorn to the lowest branch, Tom's daughter Piper Hartshorn.
In 1927, C.B. Hartshorn, a Poughkeepsie businessman saw the future potential of Rhinebeck and bought our Montgomery Street property. As cars replaced horses, he created an automobile agency and gasoline station to be known as The Rhinebeck Garage. Known to locals as the "Chevy Garage". The business grew to be very prosperous. As automobiles were still a luxury, business was booming. Customers' names sat on waiting lists for the latest model, anticipating glamorous opening day parties where they could catch a glimpse of the newest models revealed. Quite a different time then we know now.
As C.B. taught his two sons, Tom and Bobby, the car business became a family business. With their younger minds came brighter creations. Two additions were added to the original building until it totaled more than 13,000 square feet. Tom continued his father's tradition adapting the business to Rhinebeck's growth and establishing his home in Rhinebeck. Tom worked through the years as the trends for the family car changed from the station wagon to the mini-van to the SUV, the Rhinebeck Garage remained a landmark. Following the death of Tom in 1998, the Rhinebeck Garage closed its doors after servicing Rhinebeck and the Hudson Valley for more than 70 years.

With the Hartshorn spirit still so alive at 6422 Montgomery Street, Tom's daughter Piper Hartshorn embarked
on an ambitious task to convert the "Chevy Garage" into Montgomery Row. With a team of architects, construction experts, and Piper's vision, the building
has been transformed into Rhinebeck's premier commercial destination (renovation completed 2001). Click on the bulldozer to view renovations.

Piper's goal became "family," to attract independently owned businesses to Montgomery Row. Hosting businesses that would complement
Rhinebeck's community and environment. Success achieved!! Montgomery Row is a unique center housing health services, shopping galore,
and a "four star" Mediterranean restaurant.

With Montgomery Row's enormous success, in 2003, the Hartshorn family began adding to this distinctive destination with the creation of a second building
directly across the street. Completed in the Summer of 2004, what was once a barren asphalt lot sporting strings of light bulbs is now home to over 27,000
square feet of shopping, delectable dining, and essential services. Recently named Best New Development in Dutchess County by The Dutchess County Planning
Federation.
