"cozy B & Bs to elegant inns"- Hudson Valley Guide, Summer 2000

Tempting your eyes with its green rolling hills and beautiful river scapes, Rhinebeck is located in the Historic Hudson Valley halfway between Albany and New York City. No matter your interest, you'll find Rhinebeck a satisfying locale for visiting.

Sample one (or two or three) of Rhinebeck's celebrated restaurants. With the Culinary Institute of America only 20 miles away, excellent cuisine is around every corner. Rhinebeck boasts a total of 17 eateries, located right in the downtown. Be sure to dine at Montgomery Row's own Gigi Trattoria where Stanley Tucci or Bette Midler are known to frequent.

If you prefer to create a meal by "hunting and gathering," don't miss our seasonal pick-your-own fruit and vegetables at the neighboring farms or experience Rhinebeck's very own Farmer's Market (Sundays 10am to 2pm, May-Nov). Mouth-watering organic vegetables, hand-dyed wool yarn straight from the sheep's back, elegant imported teas, cheeses, fresh breads, as well as floral bouquets rivaling a box of 96 Crayola crayons.

Rhinebeck is the perfect place for a history buff. Within 15 miles, there are more than 8 historic sites plus the first Presidential Library, Franklin Delano Roosevelt's. "River Mansions" Wilderstein (home of FDR's cousin Daisy Suckley) and Staatsburgh are complementary especially for those who want a trip backward in time to the Victorian era. Rather fly over the Hudson Valley in a bi-plane? Then contact the Rhinebeck Aerodrome, the perfect place to view vintage World War II planes or experience a daredevil air show. The flight is spectacular particularly in the autumn when you can capture trees in a rainbow of colors.

If stretching your legs and breathing the country air is more your style. You'll have plenty of choices. Walking trails, Poet's Walk and Burger Hill Park are both within 5 miles. Dogs are welcome if leashed. Bring your binoculars for falcon and hawk sightings perhaps even Bald Eagles fishing from ice floes.

Cultural events occur all year long. The Center for Performing Arts provides plays, musicals, and children-friendly events such as magic shows or sing-along groups. For 25 years Upstate Films, Rhinebeck's movie house, located within steps from Montgomery Row, has fulfilled the community's thirst for independent and art films bringing Merchant and Ivory among other directors or producers and actors, such as Ethan Hawke for post-viewing conversations. And, remember to book your tickets for phenomenal symphony performances at the Richard A. Fisher Center of Performing Arts

Omega Institute features classes, seminars and multi-day workshops on alternative and holistic wellness.

And don't forget The Dutchess County Fairgrounds is only one mile from Montgomery Row. Antique Shows, Crafts Shows, a Sheep and Wool Festival, antique car or motorcycle conventions attract national attention culminating in the end of the summer treat - the Dutchess County Fair - where any child or adult can feast on cotton candy, sno-cones, and candy apples!

So much to do, you can't do it in one day?! Get cozy at one of our favorite Bed & Breakfasts: Olde Rhinebeck Inn c.1745 or The Looking Glass Bed & Breakfast.
